Cowboy here. I know it's been a while since 1 of us checked in. Have had a few ups and downs. Such is life. On the down side, we lost our Rott Tank. He was about 10 years – old for a Rott – continued to mourn his mate Panda that we lost not so long ago. His quality of life remained good. One day he stopped eating; Sar knew right away the end was in sight. She held him all night. He drifted away in her arms. Sar's grief is indescribable. When mia bambina cries, my heart shatters.
Have flown back and forth to DC a few times. Bull remains hospitalized for the time being. His progress is slow but steady. Hope to have him with us by summer. The medics are conditioned to our frequent visits; they stay out of the imp's way whenever possible. Sar comes loaded for bear – also brings a bunch of good stuff to eat – for Bull, the other wounded military, nursing staff, etc. Have had a dozen or more requests from other military to come along when Bull moves back to our place.
Had a chance to go to Italy – Rome. A few officers I served with had a reunion there. Took Sar, had a pleasant trip except… when the Swiss guards escorted the imp out of Vatican City. I didn't want to know why; that innocent look on her face when I picked her up at 1 of the gates… sainthood may not be in her future after all. The likelihood is that she entered a building or some rooms closed to the public. However, I noticed 2 of the guards were munching on Twinkies… no telling what the imp did.
Got home from Italy. Animal rescue asked if we could take a couple of Bloodhounds in for a few weeks – pups. The cats went wild; they're attracted to the long ears, groomed the pups round the clock. House full of yapping dogs running everywhere, cats chasing them, my wife cooking soft foods for them, a bit of chaos for a while. The distraction helped a bit but Sar's grief over losing Tank remains a hard loss. I owe that animal my heartfelt gratitude – a young man jumped our fence 1 afternoon while Sar worked in the yard. Tank cornered that kid, kept him on the ground away from my wife until the police arrived. Panda was alive then; used her body to shield Sar. Miss both of them. No matter how long you have them, it's always a painful loss when they go.
We’ve been in Canada the past few weeks touring provincial galleries where Sar is exhibiting her fiber art. Fills my heart to see her work on display. Home is next though our other Rott and Bullmastiff are with us. On the agenda is a trip to Poland next month, maybe a few other stops in Eastern Europe. Getting the travel bug out of my system for a bit; have to be home in time to welcome Bull. One other note: stopped in London briefly – connected with our young friend Patrick – a teenager now. Hard to believe it's the same boy we met not so many years ago. He stands tall, has a lot more confidence now, turning into a fine young man. Last note for now: for those who've emailed/asked about David. He's in Japan helping out the relief effort there.

So glad to read your post. I am happy that Bull continues to do better. I am sure all the treats that Sar makes for him and all the other people at the hospital are much appreciated. And it is amazing how restorative a good home cooked meal or treat can be.
I am so sorry about your dog. In my family the dogs were the other children, and there was always a strong sense of loss when one died. They both sounded like wonderful dogs.
I think that any inappropriateness at the Vatican was long forgotten once the twinkies came out.
I hope you or Sar posts again soon. I love reading your blog.

Cowboy,
good to hear from you.
The news about Bull is good, but not unexpected.
I can understand Sars' feelings, losing a dog is very very painful
The news that you are both well, but busy, is also good to hear.
Love and warm hugs.
Paul. aka (zealous voyeur)
Glad you two are well and that Bull is still on the mend. Sorry about Tank, but know he and Panda are waiting for you, hard to lose a member of the family but knowing they are watching and waiting helps some. The Bloodhounds sound fun! If you NEED even more energy try a Border Collie! ;)
Cowboy,
I really appreciate you giving us an update. I know Sar is so very busy. No chance of throwing a net over her and a key board and making her write is there?? Yeah, probably not. I'm glad you are both busy and happy with other things but I do miss her stories. I am happy that Bull is still mending.
I can't imagine any dogs having any better people than you and Sar and I can't imagine you loving any dogs the way you did Panda and Tank. I'm so glad all shared life and love during their time. Sad dogs don't live as long as people you two couldn't have given them any better lives, and they repaid you in full.
Hugs to you both,
PK
Cowboy,
Good to hear from you. I was a little concerned knowing Sar is prone to chest ilnesses and it has been a tough winter on the east coast. Glad to hear Bull is making progress be it slowly. Best to take it slow and steady than risk a relapse by going too fast. I know he and all the others totally appreciate all that you and Sar do for them when you visit the hospital. I am sure, for some of them, family is far away, and in the midst of all the pain caused by the exercises involved in recovery, they feel alone. You two go a long way to easing that feeling. It was also good to hear that David is doing well and involved in the terrible events in Japan. I am sure they appreciate all the help they are being given.
I am so sorry to hear about Tank so soon after Panda. From her past blogs, I know Sar looks at her 'pups' as her children and in some cases, her blockers (especially when she is running from you) I am glad she was able to lavish some love and attention on the bloodhound pups to help ease her anguish.
I am not sure what 'fiber art' involves but I am glad Sar is able to take some joy in making it. I find sewing does that for me.
It is wonderful that you are able to travel and visit countries many of us only dream about. Seeing those places through the eyes of someone like Sar must be amazing. She seems to perceive life in almost a childlike way.
Take care
Hello Sar and Cowboy,
I love you guy's site with all the stories. I've at least read them multiple times! They're great and I love Sar's writing style. I especially loved the Humorus section. I laughed pretty hard at some of the things Sar was saying in her head.
I just recently stumbled upon you two's blog. I'm glad you gave us an update on how things were going. I hope Bull will be back to himself soon. And that David is safe and sound.
Thanks for all the great reads and fun laughs.
So sorry to read about Tank, especially so soon after Panda. They are family, I do understand. So glad to hear Bull is getting better.
